Volunteer with us

We’re looking for volunteers to join our charity structure

Minehead Dementia Action is a small, local charity supporting people living with dementia and memory loss, as well as their families and carers.

To help us continue to grow and run effectively, we have a few voluntary roles available within our charity structure.

You don't need to have previous charity experience. We are looking for people who are willing to contribute their time, ideas and experience, and who would like to help shape the future of a local charity.

These roles work alongside our existing Chair, Administrator, Service Co-ordinator, trustees and volunteers. We want to share responsibilities effectively, make the most of people's skills and ensure no one person is expected to do everything.  They are not intended to be large or time-consuming positions.

Trustees

Our trustees help guide the charity and make decisions about how we operate and develop.

As a trustee, you could:

  • Help make decisions about our activities and future direction
  • Share your own knowledge, skills and experience
  • Bring new ideas and perspectives
  • Help us ensure MDA continues to operate effectively
  • Work collaboratively with our Chair, Administrator, Service Co-ordinator and other trustees and volunteers

Trustee meetings are held four times a year, with some flexibility where circumstances require it.

You don't need to have been a trustee before. We are particularly interested in people who can bring a forward-thinking, practical and collaborative approach.

Secretary

The Secretary works alongside our Chair, Administrator and Service Co-ordinator to help keep our trustee and charity paperwork organised.

This includes helping with:

  • Preparing and organising paperwork for trustee meetings
  • Supporting the administration of trustee meetings
  • Assisting with relevant Charity Commission paperwork and requirements
  • Working collaboratively with the Chair, Administrator, Service Co-ordinator and other trustees

You don't need to be an experienced charity secretary. Being organised, reliable and comfortable with paperwork is more important.

Health & Safety Lead

We are looking for someone who can help us make sure our health and safety processes remain appropriate and up to date.

If you have experience in leisure, health & safety, risk assessments or a similar area, your knowledge could be particularly valuable to us.

The role may include:

  • Helping review our health & safety checks and assessments
  • Making sure relevant paperwork remains up to date
  • Providing advice and a fresh perspective when needed
  • Working with the Administrator, Service Co-ordinator and activity volunteers to ensure relevant checks and assessments are in place
  • Attending our activities meetings where appropriate

Activities meetings are held four times a year, so this is not intended to be a day-to-day role.

You don't need to do everything yourself – we are looking for someone who can provide guidance and work collaboratively with the team.

Fundraising Volunteer/s

Minehead Dementia Action relies on fundraising to help us continue providing activities, support and opportunities for people living with dementia and memory loss, their families and carers.

We are looking for Fundraising Volunteer/s to help us make the most of fundraising opportunities in our local community.

The role may include:

  • Helping at MDA fundraising events, collections, stalls, raffles and other activities
  • Talking confidently to members of the public about what MDA does and the difference we make
  • Encouraging donations in a friendly, professional and respectful manner
  • Helping promote fundraising activities and encourage participation
  • Identifying new fundraising opportunities, events or local partnerships
  • Sharing ideas for new and creative ways to raise funds

What we're looking for

You don't need previous fundraising experience. We're looking for people who are confident, approachable and enthusiastic, and who are comfortable talking to people about our charity and asking for support.

You'll work alongside our Administrator, trustees and other volunteers, with the opportunity to contribute ideas and make a real difference.

You don't have to be available for every event. We understand volunteers have other commitments and will work together to make the most of the time and skills people can offer.

As a small charity, every contribution helps us continue supporting people affected by dementia and memory loss in our local community.

A combination of roles

There is also the possibility of combining some of these responsibilities, depending on your experience and interests.

For example, someone joining the board as a trustee may also be able to take on the Secretary or Health & Safety Lead role.

Trustees meet four times a year, with additional involvement kept to what is reasonably necessary.

What we're looking for

Above all, we're looking for people who:

✔ Are willing to make a positive contribution

✔ Can give a little time when needed

✔ Bring their own ideas, skills or experience

✔ Are happy to work as part of a small, collaborative team

✔ Want to help MDA continue to support local people affected by dementia and memory loss

You don't have to do it all. We're a small charity and understand that volunteers have their own lives and commitments. We aim to share the workload, keep things manageable and make the best use of the skills people can offer.

Could you help us?

If you would like to find out more about any of these roles, we'd love to hear from you.

Please get in touch with Minehead Dementia Action Administrator to have an informal chat about what's involved.

All of our activities/support groups are run by dedicated volunteers. We are always in need of an extra hand - whether you can help make teas/coffees, help prepare tables and chairs, or just want to lend a listening ear to our attendees. We can give you the opportunity to give back, so get in touch for a chat or to find out more!

Volunteers receive full training, and are given our volunteer’s handbook, and supported as well as have an opportunity to input at activity meetings but this is not mandatory.
